The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO, a specialised agency of the United Nations) cited a research report prepared by SIPI’s Veri-site division in WIPO’s recent launch of a its ‘BRIP’ Database (short for “Building Respect for Intellectual Property”). The SIPI report entitled ‘Badvertising: When Ads go Rogue’, prepared for the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in 2017, tracked over 1,000 popular pirate sites accessible from India and found 73% of these were supported by advertising revenue, often from leading multinational corporations with the potential of generating large revenues for the pirate sites concerned. The WIPO report can be viewed here and the SIPI report here.
